What the Child Support Scheme aims to do
The Child Support Scheme aims to ensure that:

Parents share in the cost of supporting their children, according to their
capacity

Adequate support is available for all children not living with both parents

Commonwealth involvement and expenditure is limited to the minimum necessary to
ensure children's needs are met

Incentives for both parents to participate in the work force are not impaired,
and
-
The overall arrangements are simple, flexible and efficient.
Child support legislation provides for:

Assessment of how much child support is payable by administrative assessment
-
Registration of court orders for child and spousal maintenance, court
registered agreements and administrative assessments;

Collection of child support
-
Disbursement of child support, and
-
Changes to the administrative assessment because of special circumstances.
Child support legislation does not provide for:

Care and contact of children
-
Property settlement, or
-
Determining spousal maintenance.

Family Court of Australia addresses these areas.
