Child support is calculated using the incomes of both parents. Any changes to your income may affect the amount of child support payable. If this occurs, you need to contact CSA immediately.
For example, if you lose your job and start receiving unemployment benefits, you may be able to apply to have your assessment decreased to the minimum child support amount.
CSA uses the income from your most recent tax assessment when calculating child support. If your annual income is now 85 per cent or less than the income used in your child support assessment (in other words your income has decreased by at least 15 per cent), you may elect to use an estimate of your current income.
I have received a lump sum payment. Does this affect the amount of child support I have to pay? Contact CSA if you decide to accept a voluntary redundancy package that includes a lump sum payment. The lump sum may need to be included in the estimate you make.
