Change of assessment: Reason 3
The costs of maintaining the children are significantly affected because it costs extra to care for, educate or train the children in the way that the applicant and the other parent intended.
Both you and the paying parent may apply under this reason
Things I should know
- It is essential that both parents had a shared expectation of the manner of care, education or training of the child / children at some stage. The expectation is more easily established if an activity has been commenced prior to separation, for example the child was enrolled into a school or activity before their parents' separated. However, the parents' expectations can be created at any time, not just during the period the parents were together.
- The legislation requires that the costs of maintaining the child are significantly affected because the child is being cared for, educated or trained in the manner that was expected by both parents.
- It is relevant to consider whether the activities are usual or common. If the cost is for something basic and unavoidable—like attending a public school—it is not likely to satisfy the reason.
Supporting documents
- Documents showing that both parents intended to share the costs e.g. family traditions, enrolment documents, expenses before separation or receipts for expenses incurred for other training.
- Documents showing current and future expenses including receipts for school fees, uniforms, books, tuition, coaching fees, equipment or travel.
