I live in Australia and pay child support to the other parent in New
Zealand
Why do I have to pay?
Under Australian law CSA can collect child support and or spousal maintenance
on behalf of the other parent in New Zealand. A parent receiving child care payments living in New Zealand can
ask CSA to enforce a NZ assessment for child support or a NZ court order for
child support or spousal maintenance.
Note: a NZ assessment for child support continues until the child is 19 years
old.
What if I disagree with the amount?
If you think that NZ assessment for child support is wrong you should New
Zealand Inland Revenue Child Support (NZ IRCS) (www.ird.govt.nz/childsupport). If there is a court
order for child support or spousal support and there has been a change of
circumstances you may be able to apply for the order to be changed in New
Zealand. You should seek legal advice about this.
How do I make payments?
You should make payments to CSA in Australia. We will send your payment to NZ
IRCS.

You should not make payments directly to the receiving parent in New
Zealand because such payments will not be recognised by NZ IRCS.

How do I apply?
You can apply to CSA for an Australian administrative assessment of child
support from the other parent who lives in the New Zealand. You should
contact CSA to make an application.
How is the money collected?
CSA will send the assessment to NZ IRCS for enforcement. NZ IRCS will register
the case and inform you when the first payment is due. If the paying parent
does not make payments within the required time frame NZ IRCS will enforce the
assessment using New Zealand enforcement laws.
How do I receive payments?
NZ IRCS will send collected payments to Australia. CSA will pay these amounts
to your nominated bank account or as a cheque.

child support from the other parent who is resident in New Zealand. CSA in

contact CSA to discuss your options. If there is a court order you will
need to seek legal advice on how to change the court order.

Australia?
If you make payments to NZIRCS the payments will be sent to CSA and paid to
the receiving parent in Australia.
If you make any payments directly to the receiving parent in Australia you must tell CSA.

How do I apply?
You can ask the NZIRCS to make a NZ assessment for child support payable by
the other parent living in Australia. To apply you should contact NZIRCS.
How is the money collected?
When CSA starts enforcing a court order or a NZ assessment we will ask the
paying parent to pay voluntarily. If the paying parent does not make payments CSA can take
steps to collect child support under Australian law.
How will I receive payments?
Payments received by CSA are sent to NZIRCS and paid to you in accordance with
the law in NZ. If you have any questions about your child support payments you
should contact NZIRCS.
