What is the process?

The CSA adapts the application process for each parent depending on the circumstances of each parent. There can be a long delay between when an application is made for child support and when a parent receives the first payment. This process changes depending on whether the application is made from within Australia or through an overseas authority.

Receiving parent in Australia and paying parent overseas:

  1. Parent contacts the CSA and registers a case. During this phone call we will try to establish:
    • Both parents residency – what country do they live in? For how long?
    • children’s citizenship
    • both parents income
    • care arrangements for the children.
  2. The CSA will contact the other parent, where contact details are available.
  3. The CSA will contact the ATO to confirm income, DIAC to check travel records and may work with other jurisdictions to obtain information about either parent.
  4. The case will then be registered with the CSA and an assessment notice will be sent to both customers.
  5. The CSA will then work with both parents to facilitate the transfer of payments on a regular basis to support their children.

Receiving parent overseas in a reciprocating jurisdiction and paying parent in Australia:

In this situation the application must be forwarded to the CSA Australia through the relevant authority in your country. The process in each authority may differ. The CSA is committed to working with overseas authorities to facilitate the transfer of payments between parents for their children.
